November 2008  -Prayers for Peace

'It is not enough to pray for peace. We have to work for it - to denounce injustice.

Not only when it is committed against us, but when it is committed against others;

to defend human rights. Not only our own but also theirs;

to insist that peace requires sacrifice.’

( Rabbi John Rayner )

The Week of Prayer begins on Sunday 4th November and continues to Sunday 11th November

The 7p.m. Mass on Thursday 8th. November will be dedicated to World Peace.

It will be preceded by the Rosary at 6.30.p.m.

SUNDAY

Almighty God, Creator of the world in which we live, help us today in our search for peaceful ways to avoid war, to eliminate terrorism and tyranny and to establish justice

for peoples of all races and faiths.

We promise to work: to bring the light of the Gospel to those living in darkness, to bring the hope of the Gospel to those living in despair, to bring the healing of the Gospel to the lonely, the disadvantaged, the marginalised, and to bring the peace of the Gospel to a divided world.

(CAFOD & PAX CHRISTI)

MONDAY

Father forgive:

the hatred that divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class.

Father forgive:

the covetous desires of men and nations to possess what is not their own.

Father forgive:

the greed which exploits the labours of men and lays waste the earth.

Father forgive:

our envy of the wealth and happiness of others.

Father forgive:

our indifference to the plight of the homeless and the refugee.

Father forgive:

the pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God.

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, loving one another as

God, in Christ, forgave you.

TUESDAY

Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth.

Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust.

Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace.

Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Amen.

WEDNESDAY

Loving God, in Jesus Christ you have ordered us to live as loving neighbours. Though we are scattered in different places, speak different languages, or come from different ethnic backgrounds, give us common concern, so that we may be one people, who share the governing of the world, under Your guiding purpose. May greed, war and lust for power be curbed, and all peoples enter the community of love promised in Jesus Christ. Amen.

THURSDAY

Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us to conquer the menace of evil, which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people today, and whose immeasurable effects already weigh down upon our modern world and seem to block the paths towards the future. From famine and war – deliver us. From sins against human life from its very beginning – deliver us. From every kind of injustice in the life of society – deliver us.

Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world the infinite saving power of the redemption: the power of merciful love. May it put a stop to evil. May it transform consciences. May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope. Amen. (Pope John Paul II )

FRIDAY

Justice, peace and joy, a gift from God through Jesus Christ, for each and everyone. Without true justice there cannot be true peace and without true peace true joy is impossible.

Justice is the seed that we need to plant within our hearts, to nurture and cultivate so that we treat each other with respect and dignity. As the seed of justice matures within us and is reflected in the way we treat our family and neighbour, the warmth, trust and security created will bring with it an inner peace so complete that joy will abound.

Help me Jesus, to germinate within my heart and soul your seeds of justice, peace and joy. Amen.

SATURDAY

Violence, never again!

War, never again!

Terrorism, never again!

In God’s name, may all religions bring upon the earth

justice and peace, forgiveness, life and love!

(Pope John Paul II)

SUNDAY

Persistently forgiving God, Your Son commanded us to love our enemies and pray for them.

We thank You that, through Jesus’ violent death on the cross, even enemies have been reconciled to You.

Give to all who seek to harm others Your spirit of wisdom and reconciliation, that peace and justice may prevail over violence, terrorism and warfare.

We pray for our enemies and for ourselves: lead us from prejudice to truth; deliver us from hatred, cruelty and revenge; and enable us to stand before You, reconciled through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
